Finance Minister Prof. Edward Scicluna received a courtesy call from General Workers’ Union officials, led by Union General Secretary Tony Zarb, on Wednesday 15 May, 2013.
During the visit, Prof. Scicluna and the GWU delegation had occasion to discuss several points of common interest between the Union and the Government, with a particular emphasis on precarious work, and how Government should be a model employer through the procedure with which it handles the contracting of workers.
In this regard, Prof. Scicluna said that Government recognises the need to address an issue that was affecting the livelihood of hundreds of Maltese and Gozitan families and workers, and said that Government is committed to addressing this issue in a decisive and lasting manner, especially where it concerns government contracts.
The meeting also touched upon issues pertaining to the minimum wage, and the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) mechanism, which is related to it.
