Finance Minister Prof. Edward Scicluna held a meeting with Deputy Assistant Secretary Kathleen Doherty, from the U.S. Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs on Friday 17 May 2013. Ms Doherty was accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley.
During the meeting, Prof. Scicluna and Ms Doherty discussed the current European economic climate within the context of ongoing negotiation and debate on EU levels pertaining to issues such as the Banking Union, and the exchange of information under FATCA.
During the meeting, Prof. Scicluna noted that recent economic developments in Malta are encouraging, pointing to the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission’s Spring forecast which projected moderate economic growth for 2013 and low unemployment.
Prof. Scicluna also noted that despite the fiscal slippage which took place at the end of 2012 and which spilled over into 2013 which was related to excessive spending related to the election cycle, the Government is confident that it will be able to bring the deficit back under the 3% threshold without unnecessary impacts on Malta’s economic stability.
Kathleen Doherty, a member of the Senior Foreign Service, assumed her duties as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs in September 2011. Her portfolio includes responsibility for managing relations with the European Union and Western Europe. Previously she served as the Director, Office of European Union and Regional Affairs.
