The Minister for Finance Prof. Edward Scicluna received a courtesy visit from H.E. the Swiss Ambassador Mr. Giancarlo Kessler on Friday 16th January 2015.

During the visit, Minister Scicluna and H.E. Kessler discuss several issues of mutual interest to both Malta and Switzerland.

 

These included the economic similarities between Malta and Switzerland, and the strong economic measures which Malta embarked on during the last few years, and which have resulted in a stable country that is an ideal to do business with. Minister Scicluna and H.E. Kessler also noted that Switzerland’s economic model was very similar to that in Malta.

Minister Scicluna and H.E. Kessler also discussed the role of the Financial Services industry as a very important driver for economic prosperity and growth.

Minister Scicluna also explained how, a few months back, Malta joined 50 other states and jurisdictions in signing a Pact on The Automatic Exchange of Tax Information in Berlin, under the aegis of the OECD.

Profs Scicluna said the Government is constantly encouraging the relevant authorities to introduce relevant legislation so as to strengthen vigilance of the financial system, in part by improving banks’ provisions and financial prudence.

Prof. Scicluna and H.E. Kessler both augured greater cooperation between Malta and Switzerland in the future.
