Minister for Finance Edward Scicluna has attended the 2019 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) Spring Meetings in Washington D.C. held between the 12 and 14 April.
These annual meetings serve as a platform for finance and development ministers, central bank governors, private sector executives, and academics to discuss issues of global concern including the world economic outlook, external environment and development challenges.
On the fringes of the IMF Spring Meetings, Professor Scicluna has held talks with senior officials of the two leading international financial institutions and top officials from leading rating agencies; Moody’s, Fitch Ratings and Standard and Poor’s.
Minister Scicluna attended the official IMF Financial Committee meetings where the global economic, fiscal, and financial outlook as well as its challenges for the coming years were being discussed. He also attended the 8th Ministerial Roundtable of the World Bank on the issue of the provision of social safety nets, and later the Small States Forum.
Minister Scicluna also held high-level meetings with the World Bank Executive Director, Patrizio Pagano; World Bank Country Director, Ms Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly and with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director, Domenico Fanizza.
Meetings were also held with the IMF’s EUR Article IV Mission, Jean Marc Natal and the Deputy Director at the European Department, Mr Mahmood Pradhan.
Minister Scicluna was accompanied by the Central Bank of Malta Deputy Governor Alexander Demarco.
